Discover Jarnac, the town of François Mitterrand and Cognac
Hello everyone !

Today we're heading to a charming little town : Jarnac. I loved walking along the river; it was a beautiful moment thanks to the beautiful sunshine !

A bit of history : One of Jarnac's attractions lies in its privileged location on the banks of the Charente. This river, which has long been a major trade route, has profoundly influenced the town's development. The private mansions and the architecture of the cellars of the famous cognac houses give it a unique character. To the west of Jarnac, archaeological excavations have revealed human occupation dating back to the Neolithic period, followed by a Gallo-Roman presence. In the Early Middle Ages, the town center seems to have shifted eastward, around the Priory of Saint-Pierre, which depended on the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Cybard in Angoulême.

The year 1410 marked a turning point in Jarnac's history when the important lordship was transferred to the Chabot family, who remained there until the Revolution. Jarnac is also known as the birthplace of François Mitterrand, former President of the Republic, whose birthplace is still open to visitors.
